Work with a partner to identify and analyze a large data set that interests you. Your final project should be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and a portfolio write up on the investigative process. You and your partner will also complete individual write-ups to submit. As you complete your project, keep track of your process on your portfolio.

Requirements

  1. Work collaboratively to research, investigate and analyze a Big Data set making sure that your project meets the following specifications.
    1. Data Sources: For this project, your large data set must contain at least 1000 data values/cells. (You may use one of these examples, NYC Open Data, or find others!). Your project must be about NYC. Try focusing on Transportation, Schools and Services, Public Space, or Housing
    2. Questions: For this assignment, create 3-5 questions that you believe can be answered using your chosen data set.
    3. Illustrations: For this assignment, create visualizations where appropriate that illustrate the answers to your questions (e.g. charts, graphs, etc.).
  2. Download the data and put it into a Google Fusion table.
  3. Work collaboratively to use the manipulation tools available on the Google Fusion table platform to answer your 3-5 questions.
  4. Create visualizations that illustrate the answers to your questions.
  5. Produce a collaborative write-up that will allow someone else to understand your investigation (your project) and its process (details to come later).
  6. Give a 5-10 minute oral presentation with visuals (a PowerPoint with charts, graphs, etc.).
  7. When your project is complete, produce an individual write up that explains your project and the collaborative process used to complete the project.

Required Slides

  1. Cover Slide with project title (which you make up) and group member names
  2. Description of your data set
  3. One slide for each question that includes:
    1. The question
    2. The answer
    3. a graph or data table to support your answer
  4. How will your questions/answers be used by the community
